Have a 00 7.3 manual trans with 73,000 on it. A couple of weeks ago it died a few times which eventually led to permanent failure. The dash would lite up "Check Engine" and "Water in Fuel" would flash and the tach would jump erratically. Read up on a forum and replaced the CPS. Problem solved (I thought). Today, the truck was idling in the driveway before a trip when I heard a stumble. Went out to check and nothing appeared out of the norm. When I pushed on the accelerator and held it at roughly 2000 RPM for a few minutes to make sure we were OK the RPM dropped to idle w/o letting off of the accelerator pedal (or moving it at all). Trying this several times with the same results over the next hour.
There were a few oddities with this. 1- Every time it dropped to idle the "Wait To Start" light would briefly flash at that same moment. 2- Pushing further down on the pedal after the above occured would not change the RPM from idle. Only fully releasing the pedal would allow you to resume acceleration. 3- Turning the key to ON but not starting the engine would cause the tack to jump around and the "SES" light to flash, but not every time??
Also FYI, there is a new fuel, air and oil/filter change in the last month.
Any comments or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again!
I'm kind of having the same problem out of my 01 7.3. Mine does it to me on the road while I'm accelerating it just stops fueling and I push in the clutch and it idles but I have to tap the gas pedal several times with the clutch in before it picks up and accelerates again. It has me stumped. I replaced my CPS not to long ago too. This problem really irritates me especially while pulling a trailer! Sometimes it won't do it for weeks and other times it'll do it a few times a day. When it does it the check engine light comes on most of the time, sometimes no lights come on though. Any ideas out there? Just sounds like lifted77 and I have some of the same symptoms.
Gim419 by any chance do you have a Ford alarm system on your truck. My truck has one and I am just trying to narrow down what could be causing this problem.
I am thinking maybe a short somewhere thats causing these things to fail or it just could be a coincodence and they were just worn out.
No alarm on mine. I'd think it's almost got to be a sensor going down. It's just so weird cause the truck doesn't start to miss or die just goes to idle and won't move for 5-10 seconds then it's fine. Let me know if you find anything out on yours.
I was test driving a Ford F250 four wheel drive with a V10 and was stopped at a red light in town when the engine all of sudden accelerated up to around 5,000 rpm's and I hit the car in front of me. I had my foot on the brack and stood on it as hard as I could to try to keep it from moving but after hitting the car in front of me I finally turned the switch off to stop it. Neither of us was hurt bescause we were both stopped but it done a job on the lilttle Honda. I have never seen this happen before. Anyone have any suggestions what could have casued this. The Ford place came and got the truck (didn't hurt the truck) and when they put it on there computer to check it out everything showed up fine but something happend bescause there was no was to have my foot on the brake and gas pedeal at the same time espacially when I was stand up out of the seat standing on the breack bescause of distance between the pedeals, it is a automatic transmission but I know something had to cause it to revve up like that.
thanks for your suggestions
Bill
