My left rear began smoking while driving yesterday. Since I was using the e-brake over the weekend while doing tune-up, I think it was still partially engaged thus causing the problem. I engaged and released it a few times and all seemed ok. I pulled the wheel just to make sure all was well and found the self-adjuster cable in 2 pieces inside.
Do I need to replace this cable ASAP or can it wait a while?
I never had much faith in "self adjusters" anyway and may not replace it at all if I don't have to.

The self adjuster cables and other parts are available from NAPA, another kit can be purchased to replace all the self adjuster parts. The self adjusters only work when the vehicle is backed up and the brakes applied.
The E-brake may need adjusting: The front park brake cable goes to an equalizer bar under the cab where the rear cables also attach. There is an adjustable rod with a nut there that can be tightened or loosened to adjust the cables.
