i would get a kit and clean it.......it's nasty inside.....
I just did a 650 holley for a friend of mine that he pulled out of a ditch......it was real bad, not saying yours is like this one but the fuel leaves a nasty brown glaze like chit inside them and bugs will nest inside the air bleeds and vents........
I had to glass bead this one inside and out, you would not believe how bad it was. I hope it works when I'm done, had to paint it red..looks good.
piece of cake..I'm doing a Holley 80555 spread bore for a chevy right now.......nice carb I would like to try one on my 302, looks like you could get better milage with one it has small primaries......
Which ones had good heads? were any built with forged parts?
ALL Ford pushrod V8's had forged rods, NO exceptions there. Some are better than others, but they're all forgings. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the stock cast cranks. They've been used in every form of racing, including 500 mile Nascar races. We ain't talking chevy parts here. The 351C cranks were even run in Pro-Stock drag racing in the late 70's to mid 80's. The cast cranks are lighter than a forged steel one too. The only weak stock cranks I know of are the early 50/oz 5.0 and 255 cranks. There's also nothing wrong with running cast pistons either, as long as you're not super charging it or spraying it.
Stock head will flow just fine through 3000 RPM. If you are racing then the aftermarkent heads are the way to go. As for the orginal Q, the F4TE casting was my choice for the roller cam. I figured that those engine blocks would have seen a lot less friction in their time.
i thought that i would add on to this...i read today in an older mustang monthly mag that the 68 302 heads have the smallest combustion chambers and have 351w size valves. it was something i dont remember hearing before. maybe someone could find these heads instead of looking just for a 69 351w head.
