High-Flow Cats?

Who makes a good high-flow catalylic converter? I'm looking for a pair to go with a true dual 3'' system.

Thanks in advance.

Check out Dynatech cats. They are around $160 each but they really flow. I have a 3" on my 04' SD and you can see through it. The dynatech cat is also very compact. The core is a honeycomb hard ceramic that glows orange and burns off some of the polutants.

I like those Dynatechs. Thanks guys for the input.

Would a muffler shop do a custom 3'' for me? I plan on doing a true dual with headers and some kind of Flowmaster muffler, I'm trying to find a set that sounds loud and badass on the outside but is reasonable on the inside.

I have found a Hermoff to be better than Dynomax, Carsound or Magnaflow. Flows better, lasts longer, better construction. I make my living replacing Carsound/Magnaflow. They cost less too. Trust me, a Magnaflow is far from it, their flow ratings are no better than anything else, and their efficiency is inferior. You are paying for a brand name and not actual performance. Check out www.bearriverconverters.com and do the comparison for yourself.

Hello all;

I have been digging around and have come to find out that many of the aftermarket cats are not really that high flowing when compared to the factory cats. In may cases the claim is just advertising hype. The primary example that I am working on is my 97 f-250 with a 460. Suposedly, the factory cat flows fairly well. The flaws with it center around the same reasons it flows well, its size. Being 8"+ in diamater, it is large, heavy and easy to damage. My current understanding is that most aftermarket cats will not out flow it (assuming it is healthy).

A second shortcoming of it is the 2.5" outlet. I have heard a rummor that this can be fixed by litteraly cutting the outlet end off and rewelding a larger pipe in its place. Of course this would be a fairly delicate procedure and if just hacked into would destroy the cat.

I guess my questions would be: what are your thoughts on this procedure? I have not done this yet, I am currently looking for input on this. Any guesses how difficult it would be to weld? Is the shell of the cat steel or stainless?

Thanks for any input.

The shell is a low grade stainless steel on the factory cat. It will corrode and pit, and it will get a rustlike color, but it does not rust outright like regular steel. Why waste the money on a part that is inferior to the OEM when it doesn't come in 3.5" either. It would be just as difficult to modify a Magnaflow to be 3.5" as it would be to modify the OEM you already have, but would cost you more money to do and would not gain you any advantages. The Magnaflow does not actually outperform the factory unit. I know this because the company that makes the ceramic bricks for Carsound/Magnaflow also makes the ceramic bricks for Ford. The difference is the Ford unit is better built, has a higher precious metal content, and lasts longer if properly maintained. My advise, modify what you already have, it will be cheaper and will work just as well.
