AC Diagnostics

Need a little more help on an old AC system...'93 Aero 3.0L with R12 system.

How can I determine the problem when the AC won't engage at all? I may have a switch/relay issue that won't allow the compressor to turn on/enegage? What sort of simple electrical test can I do to determine if I am getting power to/thru the right places?

Or, could my system be so low in refrigerant, the sensors won't allow the system to engage? I thought the compressor had to run so the sensor could signal low pressure and then have the computer turn off the compressor?

Again, is there some sort of simple electrical test I could use to determine if the compressor is getting the proper signals?

Thanks,
Michael

One quick thing you can do is pull the plug of the pressure sensor on the accumulator and then jumper the contacts in the plug. If your compressor kicks in you have either low refrigerant or a bad switch. In any case, I would have someone do a quick check on the system with a set of gauges. That will tell you a lot more.
