I just started to work on my 77 f150 with a 300. I am trying to get it started right now. It is getting fuel but no spark. I think the coil is bad even though it is brand new (previous owner put it on). I checked the 2 wires that hook to it and they both lit up my light tester. Is that supposed to happen? Also when I took both wires off and tested them the pos lit up and the neg didn't, the thing is the key was turned off but it still had power!!! Is that supposed to happen?
The quickest way to see of the coil, or a spark plug wire is bad is to insert a known good spark plug, place it on a good ground area on the engine, and crank it over. No spark? Probably is the coil. They are pretty cheap, so go that way first.
If you do not have a spark plug handy, then use a #2 Phillips screwdriver into the coil wire, and lay it near a piece of metal, about 1/8" away should suffice. you will see a spark jump from the screwdriver to the metal if the coil is good.
Also, check the inside of the cap to ensure the rotor is making good contact with the center "ball", and that all of your contacts are not burnt off.
I have checked the coil and no spark. When I pulled the cap off there isn't any burn marks from it sparking. I think I have narrowed it down to my ignition switch. I will see if this works tonight.
