Hello
Does anyone know where the temperature sending unit is located on a straight 6
300, 4.9, 1985 F150. I can not seem to locate it anywhere. Does this ford just has the temperature "sensor" unit?
Mine was on the thermostat housing as I recall. I couldn't find a direct replacement, all that was available was a single post sensor. Sending unit and sensor are interchangable terms in the automotive world, hope that helps aleviate some confusion.
Your gauge temp sensor is under the intake/exhaust manifold at the back of the engine on the heater core side. Single wire connects to it that runs around the back of the motor over the bell housing.
The one on your thermostat housing is part of the emission control system.
The sensor will come out with a 3/4" socket. Do not wrap teflon tape on the threads of the new one. Teflon may cause the sensor not to ground out, and would make your gauge either not read anything, or read inaccurately.
