trans cooler lines

Does anyone know what cooler line is the return line on a 4R70W trans. They are lined up vertically. I dont know if it is the top or bottom. Also has anyone used the procedure on changing auto-trans fluid found in a article on this site. Does it work good? I have a chilton's and it says to drop pan, change filter and put 3 quarts of fluid in. But the trans holds almost 14 quarts, I dont think that sounds good to just change 3 out of 14 quarts.

Before you go thru all of the trouble, check the bottom of the bell housing for a rubber plug. If you have one then pull it, you then should have access to the tc. Majority of these tc's have drain plugs in them. You can either bump the starter over, but don't start, or you can put a wrench on the bottom pully (crank pully) and turn it until the plug comes around. If you can find the plug and drain the tc along with dropping the pan, then you would not have to go thru all the trouble of unhooking a cooler line and flushing it.

Would that still get all the old fluid out? I just bought the truck and would like to make sure I get all the old fluid out and new in. Its gonna be trouble anyways cause I'm gonna have to take crossmember off to get at two back pan bolts. I can't seem to get any wrench on them. I followed lines to radiator one goes into radiator other goes into cooler in front of radiator. Im assuming it goes into radiator them into cooler, am I right or is it the other way around.

It will get you with in a quart or so, and that is close enough. As for the pan, you can leave the crossmember in place if you remove the mount. Take a jack and place it under the transfercase, if it is 4wd, or the extension housing, if it is 2wd, and jack the tranny up. This will give you full access to remove the mount and get at the back pan bolts.
