Post Fresh Air Heater Conversion - '73

Hi, I'm new. I have an interesting question...does anyone have any thoughts on blocking off the fresh air intake on the heater of my '73? I have searched and searched, and have not found anything on the web or in a manual about doing so.

It might seem like a petty delimma, especially since I'm a Texan (and by most peoples' standards, it's just not that cold in Big D), but I think sucking in outside air through such a small core is pretty dumb. I mean, is the air inside the EB REALLY such offal that it can't be recirculated, hence, making it warm enough to constitute even having a heater? I can hardly imagine how freakin' cold it is in some Wisconsonians' Broncos.

Anyhow, I thought about simply disconnecting that accordian-type intake right there by the heater core and blocking off the intake hole either where it connects on the inside or outside at the vent, but I'd like to hear from someone with thoughts, either pro or con.

By the way guys (and gals, I suppose), great forum!

Thanx,
wyleecoyote

One problem you might encounter is that defrosting/defogging the winshield is much more effective when using fresh air. I went to a 195 degree thermostat in the engine, and it noticeably helps the heater temp.

that sounded pretty good, "is the air inside that awful?" you ought to ride in mine with me, my cousin cleetis and my buddy bubba. you would keep the outside air hose on.

Welcome to FTE, Wyleecoyote

I disconnected the one on the'74 I had and never had any problems.Like M. Fords may be right about the fresh air, I don't know. It just doesn't get that cold in Carolina either.

I'd give it a try, if it doesn't work, put it back.

Chuck

Welcome to the site. I once had a 56 truck that did not use fresh air to the heater. It worked ok.

Wylee,
I run with mine off. I just hose off and covered it with a peice of sheet metal. Up here in Alaska if you run fresh air when it is -35F you better have all your snow gear on also. I do fog up quicker with the hose diconected due to the moisture from my breath. You won't die from it. Good luck, Lance.

Thanks Guys, I really appreciate all the helpful replies and for the welcomes. I especially like the comment about the relatives...very amusing.

I believe I will try the disconnect and see if there is any improvement, I will also try the lower temp thermostat. I will repost with news one way or the other, we are supposed to get a pretty good little cold snap later in the week.

Thanx again,
wyleecoyote
