I have a `97 F-150 4 x 4 Offroad 4.6 w/110k miles on it.
The converter is slipping when engaged, really noticeable from 40-60 MPH at a cruise. Tranny fluid was replaced @55K, then @90k it was cleaned/recycled. Disengage the converter and tranny is tight and smooth at all speeds.
Am I loosing the converter or is their a speed sensor going bad??
No error codes yet.
I have a 99 F-150. You may want to check the pressure plate ....yes there is a pressure plate in a automatic transmission. The factory setting is too low for complete lock up at certain speeds. There is a cheap part and an expensive part to fix this. One is a friction modifier and the other is a Torque converter and a pressure sensor inside of the transmission....which i consider one part. Your F-150 should have a Lock up converter to save Gas.....yeah right.....with a electronic pressure switch......the switch is set to activate at a insufficient pressure which cause the two plates to glaze over and slip. This is what is happening in my truck. The sensation is like the engine is working overtime and the truck feels overly tired...then it catches for a sec....repeat a few times and then complete lock up of the converter....then alot of power.....also...there is a slipping between first and second....basically any gear below the lock up threshhold......try a transmission flush and a new screen+friction modifer...By a reputable shop....this will buy you some time....till the expensive stuff....good luck and tell me how it turns out
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Jun-02 AT 06:44 AM (EST)]Hi John,
Your description doesnt exactly fit my problem
I have no slipping in the first 3 gears at all, its all in the converter, overdrive. When I accelerate in a moderate way without downshifting it doesnt slip. But if I accelerate lightly it slips like a plug miss firing.
Disengage the converter and it runs smooth at all speeds., engage the converter and the problem shows up only in the overdrive gear.
Running between a constant 35-40 MPH and it really seems like a bad miss fire, like the timings gone bad.
Could this be the same thing you describe??
sounds like my problem too, the slipping is between 40 and 55 took to ford shop they said that the oxygen sensor was cuasing the problem , could this be true? or are they not getting the full picutre?
nudiebar
i had the same prob. my truck would shudder, like i was going over railroad tracks around 45mph, i drained my transmission oil, replaced the tranny filter and refilled it.. no more problems

I had the same problem. You need new plugs and wires. When mine did this I got it put on the computer, they couldnt find anything wrong. They looked at my plugs and needed new ones. Runs great now.
My problem sounds the same, at around 40 to 55 I get a shutter and it feels like the rear end is to light or something. when i hook up my trailer it gets worse. does this sound familular.
