hi everyone this is my first post but i got ahold of a 1983 standard cab long bed f-150 and a cummins 12 valve engine i have always been a huge cummins guy and i had a dodge for awhile but i couldn't afford to keep the front end together ne how i want to drop my new cummins in my old truck i'm not worried about engine or transmissin placement i 'm worried about the diff's, the frame and the suspension does neone know if the frame will be strong enough to hold up or if it's different from a 1/2 to a 3/4 ton.
Ok now on the the diff's they were changed before i got the truck to a higher ratio i'm not sure what they are but the truck will fly for what it is but i still don't think they will hold the torque from the cummins in that case i have a rear out of a 88 e-350 and my boss has a wrecked f-350 like a 95 or so. but the front of my truck is radius arm and springs and i think that front of the f-350 is leaf can i put leafs under the front of my truck with the brackets off the f-350 or custom brackets (i am no stranger to torches and welders) then with the weight of the engine i can add leafs or air bags to level it out.
So that is my project any help would be greatly appriciated
Thanks TJ
I would look to getting a 3/4 or 1ton frame. Would handle the torque of the diesel better. As for the 95 your boss has, unless it is a 4x4, it also has the twin i beam & radius arms, but is heavier components than the 1/2 ton.
I would agree, put the whole frame under the sheetmetal, rather than try to rework the 1/2 ton chassis. They put a lot more holes in the 1/2 frames, more opportunity for cracking. It depends how crazy you are planning to get with the motor as to how well things will hold up.
Chances are, hw is dealing with a 4x4 F350, as the 2wd still uses coil springs on the front with the twin I beam fronts...
