Angry towing problems need some advice

My wife bought me a 7'x16 V nose dual axel trailer in Baxley GA well I drove down there from Elizabeth City NC with no problems. Hooked up the trailer and started to head back. I got about 40 miles out of Baxley on US1 when the truck bucked and stumbled, as I looked out the passenger side mirror, I saw lots of smoke; went to pull over but it seemed to of cleared up. I continued to press on and it it started to stumble again I watched the smoke out of the passenger side mirror and it would puff black with each stumble. I decided to break it right so I pressed the peddle and blew black smoke just like at the truck pulls but suprise it didn't break ( I didn'think it would) this continued all the way through South Carolina I eventually pulled into a rest station but, out of fear of the engine not starting, I didn't shut it off and let it idle and then tryed to go back on the freeway' as I pressed the throttle down the engine seemed to surge the more I pressed the more it surged RPMs UP and DOWN. After about 5 mins of this it seemed to clear up and that never came back (yet) but the stumbling and smoke is still there; steady throttle on only some inclines others no problem. There really seems to be no rhyme or reason to it not even a pattern to share. I did figure out that when it does it once stepping on the gas pedal and (what I call ) blowing it out did seem to help. well wouldn't you know it once I got into my neck of the swamps I tryed and tryed to get it to do it but the only smoke I got was the normal when you romp on the throttle.
This truck is a Ford F-350 PSD Lariat F X4 - So if anyone out there can help me figure out what the problem might be I would appreciate it - I have a 4 day trip coming up soon and I do not want to be stuck on the road with an easily repairable problem. Thanks in advance for the advice.

I am guessing by your profile it is a 2004 6.0 PSD. Is this the correct year and engine?

If it is a 6.0, sounds like the EGR valve is sticking or the EBP sensor is bad.
Did you get a CEL?

Oh yeah, most be a new ford engineer idea. Put old motors(more reliable) in newer frame rails(new technology) lol.

Do you have a 6.slow or a 7.3?

Could also be a bad fuel pump, bad fuel, a fuel load of algea or trash clogged your fuel filter severely.
All of these will exhibit your symptoms. For further info go up to the 7.3 99-03 forum and talk to Kwik.

Up date: I took the truck into the dealer today and it poped with an EGR code when they pulled the EGR out the tech said the valve had completly failed. Somthing about these two hole on the base are not supose to be restricted but mine was all messed up. I will be taking the trailer out tomarrow and will post if it acts up again.
