A tranny shop told me that with the M5OD transmission you have a 50% chance of getting a good one or a bad one. You either have to rebuild them every 30K or they will last over 200K. And based on my experience and others with trucks with this tranny it sounds about right. My truck has had the tranny rebuilt for time in 80k and my dad's truck which is nearly identical has had no problems. By the way, in AZ the rubber plugs on top of the tranny last 4 years max, then it starts leaking fluid.
Also, the M5OD 5th gear is 0.80 and the ZF is 0.76 or 0.77 depending on the version you get, so the overdrive is actually higher in the ZF than the M5OD and should be better on the highway.
I am done trying to have this M5OD rebuilt and want to get something more reliable. Some of the M5OD's may be fine, but I haven't heard any issues with the ZF5.
