does anyone know if a 4.6 liter in a 97 Mercury cougar will work in my 98 f150? I have the 4.6 now with 250K miles and a blown head gasket...there is a guy here close to home that has a totalled cougar with a good motor and transmission for $350..it has 92K miles on it....thanks alot, troy
Not sure, but I think the Cougar is a returnless fuel system. That means the top end [intake]won't work. You might have trouble with mounting holes for brackets on the heads or the block. Just some things to watch out for.
i was planning on just using the head and the block from the cougar motor but that makes me wonder if I shouldnt just fix the motor thats in my truck now...???
ok tork and other ford techs...i am planning on buying this 4.6 from the cougar...do you think I will be able to just use the head and the block with my intake and other stuff?
None of the 4.6L Cougars or TBirds were returnless fuel. That engine will work perfectly fine in the truck-you'll need to swap over the intake and all of the accessories, and possibly the front timing cover to keep the belt routing correct for the truck.
The heads are the same type and port configuration, the cams are the identical same spec, and the block will accept any of the external dress with no problems. If your truck has a Windsor-built 4.6L,then the car's Romeo engine will have the oil fill on the opposite side as the truck, and might be in close proximity to the PS fluid resevior, but it should clear fine. If you've got a Romeo built 4.6L in the truck, then you can just use the cam covers from the truck engine to get the oil fill in the correct location.
