what are you goals and uses for this rig. are you stuck on running a 302 or are other motor swap options something you may consider?
personally i would have a local engine builder do my motor. you may pay a tad more but i always like knowing who is doing the work if i can not do the work myself which is rare.
I have heard of them but have never dealt with them myself. As kem said, if you can't do the work yourself you'll want to be reassured that the work will be warrantied and it won't cost you shipping and the work to remove and install. Another option is Jasper engines, I have dealt with them and had good luck with the foreign power plant that was purchased........3 year 36,000 mile warranty guarranteed from them, but they will cost you a little more upfront.
I am kinda set on the 302 because my rig got bad enough gas millage before the roll and I don't want to make it worse. Also this will (probably) not be the last motor I put in the truck. I need to get it on the road as cheap as possible and the pirce for this motor is very attractive. Lastly I've done the local engine builder route before for another project and it didn't turn out so well so thats why I'm looking for a company with a warranty.
read the fine print. most places like this warranyt only if a shop does the install work. jasper is similar to that as well. just an fyi a 5.8 in these rigs get the same if not better mpg then the 5.0. reason is the 5.8 produces more torque at lower rpms making it easier to move our heavy rigs. for instance i had a 5.0 in my 88 running an aod,3.55 gears and 31" tires. i got 12 city and 14hwy. i swapped to a 5.8 running same setup and got 13city and 16hwy.
if you want quick, back on the road and you plan on a different setup later then locate a running 5.0 from a wrecking yard and swap that in. or for the same relative price and time get a 5.8 and swap that in. its no more work, you reuse your 5.0 efi harness, motor mounts, tranny and front accessories. just get a complete 5.8 from wrecking yard (thats what i did) and its a plug and play setup. you will need to get the Y pipe widened slightly or grab the Y pipe from a wrecking yard and depending on tranny get the proper flexplate/flywheel.
just showing you all the options is all. good luck and keep us posted.
I noticed you're in Moscow. You might run over to Lewiston and see Fred at K & F if he's still there. I haven't talked to him in a long time, but he's a good machinist and he stands behind his work.
