Ok, I've got a 96 F-250 with the Powerstroke. Two days ago I went out from work to leave and the truck would not start. The volt meter was very low and I just got the clicking noise when I tried to start it. I tried to jump start the truck and it would still just click when I tried to start it.
I had the truck towed home and checked the voltage on the batteries and one was at 80% and the other at 60% of capacity. Thinking it was the starter solenoid I replaced it and it started just fine.
Today, I'm driving to work and the stereo shuts off and then comes back on. I start watching the volt meter on the truck and when I come to a stop light the needle twitches a little but still shows a good charge.
I get to work and shut the truck off and I get the sick sounding "key in ignition" chime and I tried to restart the truck and were back to two days ago. Low reading on the volt gauge on the dash and the truck won't start.
is the ground for the solenoid making a good contact. make sure it's clean. Alco check your starter ground
Jim
All of the contacts are good on the solenoid but I haven't checked the ground on the starter. I wouldn't think a ground problem on the starter would cause the false low voltage reading.....?
Also...batteries can have defects of different types..have them load checked individually...if you have one defective one..it will not let the other one do it's job properly once they are hooked together in parallel.
