Has anyone had their 4.2 sound like a diesel the other day i was driving in a alley with the windows down a heard the sound of a diesel so i stopped & in fact it was out of my truck its not loud but the echo did sound just if i was driving a diesel has anyone encountered this before...trucks running fine and all just wondering why the diesel sound? Any feedback greatly appreciated thanks!!!

 

my 4.2 has been making the same sounds for the past couple of months before i threw a rod. it had been buring tons of oil. like a quart every 45 or so miles. are you buring lots of oil? it has been a known problem for the 4.2's

 

I have heard of this over the years here from several different guys. Neither of mine has ever made the sound and I don't ever remember reading of a known problem that causes it.

i had never heard of described as a diesel sound either but after F4L956 mentioned it i can see where it would sound diesel like. its just how my truck has sounded for the pasr few weeks before it croaked.
F4L are you also getting some engine knocking sounds or other odd noises on start up?

 

Nope no oil missing no other strange noises on startup just that lil like diesel sound strange but do have it still did just get a bigger exhaust on it 3" & the other only problem on it after a week or so my SS muffler tip is all carboned up real bad dont know what may cause that after so lil time! hi i have put off giving a reply to this post but yes my 97 sounds like a diesel when it echos off bridges and enclosed walls etc. all is well and runs fine but it is a bit off-putting. having rebuilt the motor myself after the gasket failures i know there is nothing a miss. i find it a strange motor as it seems like there is very little torque but it goes on to rev like the clappers and builds speed quite rapidly.
the diesel sound has never got and worse over the 3 years so i put it down to one of those things. bokker.

 

My dad used to own a f150 swb with the 4.2. It sounded just like a diesel.. it was cool!
