97 4.6 running rough
Hey all my truck is running rough in gear. It seems ok in park or neutral. The check engine light came on but I am some ten miles from az code reader. I was just wondering if there is something obvious to look at. I have had this prob for about a week and a mechanic told me to replace the fuel filter so I did but still have the same problem. Probally two weeks before this all started I changed the egr tube and the truck ran better than it has in years but then this problem started. I also noticed that when I put on the brakes that the headlights will dim just a bit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Any other issues? Volt meter reading higher/lower than normal? Is the battery still good shape? I had BIG issues with aftermarket plug wires, so if you go that deep into it PONY-UP for FOMOCO wires, very expensive but you won't have to worry with them later!

Just this past week, my '98 was basically doing the same thing. The problem ended up just being time for new spark plugs for me, but I gave it an entire tune up anyway. Wires could do the same thing. Moore is right, don't skimp on wires and make sure to use either Motorcraft or Autolite plugs if you go that route. It could be a number of other things, but plugs and wires are a good place to start. If you search these forums for "running rough" like I did, you will find a lot of posts with other's experiences of the same sort and what the problem ended up being for them. Good luck.
