Had an issue come up with my 450. Dealer has it and is not sure what it is, thought maybe some of you would have some ideas.
It is making a whining sound from the rear end. Sounds like gear whine to me. It gets louder the faster you go, but stops entirely as soon as you let off the pedal. When it has a load on it, such as a trailer, it is 5 or 6 times as loud, but again it stops as soon as you let off the pedal. My first thought was the gears as it definitely seems to be coming from the rear.
What type of whine is it? Usually truck that have lots of miles the rear end developes a howling/deep type noise. Where as a disintegrating bearing makes a screaming/scraping type noise. Strait ahead or turning? High speed or low speed?
My first thaught is differential, but I've personaly been fooled on an e-350 with what you explained and it was a bad hanger bearing. Found this out after opening up the diff and ripped it apart to find nothing wrong.
I could not believe a hanger bearing would whine under load and go quite on deleration but this was the case. Should have seen my face after I changed the hanger bearing , then road tested the van and it was quite.
I have a similar whine on my 08 F450 at the 55 mph range,,,,does not change under load only speed and decelleration. Figured it too was axle (rear gear) whine. Heard it could also be carrier bearing.....Not bad enuf to chase yet.
It is whining going straight or turning does not matter. However another, and perhaps related problem, is that when starting from a stop and turning, such as at a stop light, and when I have a load on it has a terrible shudder. Feels like it is in 4x4 on hard surface except the shudder is from the rear end.
Anyways dealer called back. They decided that the gears are toast.
Strut - I have 7500 miles on mine, the whine got progressively worse. Keep an eye on the TCS switch (if you have it). After awhile mine stayed lit (off) and pushing it did nothing.
Are the 4.88s set up the same that Ford has been running in the past with their 450s chassis or is it a new rearend? Strut towing anyplace this holiday? We have our longest trip this year. 1 1/2 miles from the house.
I was just told that it is a new rear end. I thought it was the same one. However I was thinking about changing to 4.30's and thought while they got it open maybe I can get them to change it to 4.30 and I would pay for the change to the front. But they will not do it, or I should say they will do it but they will charge me full price. So I said screw it put in new 4.88's. I was quite surprised by the cost of the rear end gears. They said the parts alone for the rear was about $1,800. Front end was about what I expected $400. When I questioned them about it they just said that the gears in the rear are just massive and cost alot. Oh well, it is a good dealership but I think this is out of their hands.
Have felt the shudder under acceleration but not any other noises other than engine and tires. Be interesting to see what those gears look like if the dealer deos decide to replace them.

Yes I have asked them to keep the old ones so I can look at them. If they look "special" I will take some pics.
Firehawk198.......Only towed about 40 miles 1 way this past weekend. and 130- 1way the weekend before. Tows good, mileage has been 9-9.3 on the lie-o-meter.
Leaving the 29th of June for Myrtle Beach, then I'll be able to tell what this truck is made of, it's about 630 mile each way, should have a good feel by then??
