Engine Storage

I've decided to take the 4.0L engine out of my crashed '93 Aero and store it for 6-9 months. It's already been sitting for 6 months or so in the crashed Aero. It will still start and run. It's not the original engine in this Aero. It's a Jasper long block replaced a couple years ago and has about 50K miles on it ride currently. My plan is to buy a '93 Explorer or '93 Ranger and drop this motor into it. In the interim, what should I do to the engine while it sits inside my garage?

Thanks,
Michael

change to fresh oil in engine and add one of these to oil

get one each of these products or similar at your local boating marine supply for the engine

fog engine thru TB
http://www.pennzoil.com/products/mar...gging_oil.html

add to oil
http://www.boatersworld.com/product/...3Bcilubricants

add fuel stabilizer to the last gallon or so of gas in tank and run dry
drain fuel rail when engine out

keep the PCM/ECU, you may need it with the MAF and sensors on the Aero 4L

change ATF to fresh if you are going to keep tranny

well the first thing i would do is balance out the PH level in your cooling system. if you hav ever had a swmming pool or gold fish you will know how to do this . this is vary important and most often over looked.. if you dont have a engine stand buy one! or borrow one! .. . harbor freight 750lb=29 bucks 1000lb=39 bucks and pick up a bottle of power punch and wile you are at it pick up a can of WD-40.... before pulling the motor start it up and bring it to operating temp then add your bottle of Power punch.. i know people hate the stuff and never use it.. but that sticky gooy crap will cling to what ever it touches it will coat all your inturnal parts.. wat can i say works gr8t for pickiling a engine... continue to run the engine for at least 15 minutes or take it for a drive around the block.. you don`t want that sticky crap to setel to bottem of the pan... . now shut it down and drain the radiator and block..... . now you can pull the motor and mount it to your new engine stand place a pan under the motor to catch any oil drips..... now pull the dip stick and place a vacume hose tightly over the dip stick tube and put a clamp on it. now fill the motor with oil... this is a good time to use any old used oil you may have laying around the shop. fill the block untel the oil comes out the rubber vacume hose and then plug it off with a screw or bolt.. now pull all the freeze plugs and spray the inside of the water jackets with WD-40 and place the plugs back in finger tight.. spray the intake and exhost with WD-40 and seal it wit a plastic bag and rubber band this will seal out moisture..... give the water pump a spinn wile spraying WD-40 and cover the fittings with plastic as well.... .. to avoid electrolysis from attacking the aluminum you can also clamp a old set of jumper cables to the block and clamp the free end to a ground.. now spray the block down with WD-40 and place a plastic garbage bag tightly over the motor .. .... you have just successfully pickiled your first block now you can sleep well knowing your motor is protected and safe from all corrosion... lol.. .. .. .. don`t forget to drain the oil and install new freeze plugs before installing your fresh *did i say fresh* motor . .. lol . . good luck

The Best thing to do is leave it where it is and start it every couple of weeks until your ready to pull and use it.

i agree 100%
it is vary handy to keep the old doner van around for extra parts. add a little fuel stabilizer to the tank and keep the cooling system healthy and it will be just fine for a year or so . .. . it would also be a good idea to pick up a block heater for the long winter months .. . i have also seen little solar fans that can be used to keep mold and mildew from forming just incase you want to part the interior out when the job is done
