Which rear end?

I acquiered three older Ford truck from my grandpa. Two of them are 1954's and the third is a 1956. One of the 1954's is a 4x4 Marmon Harrington conversion that is about 95% complete and the 1956 is very complete so I do not want to change or modify them. The third truck, a 1954, looks like it was a parts truck. There is no engine or tranny in it and various other small parts are missing. I to make this truck into a semi-daily driver. I want a newer engine and tranny in it along with a newer braking system in it for convenience and comfort. I wanted to put a newer 9" rear end in it but I wanted to know if there is a 9" out there out of any other Ford car or truck that is the same width as the rear end outof the 1954. Thanx for any help or suggestions.

57-72 f100 9" rear will work. Other options can be found in the tech articles on this website. Your grandpa left you with some great treasures, good luck with them.

Thanks for the info havi! I was wondering if you have any other info on the type of conversion I am thinking of. I want to put a fi 5.0 in the truck with an older AOD (not the AODE.) I have several mid 80's cars that are fairly complete (lincoln towncar and a mecury gran marquis) that I want to scavenge for parts. I was wondering if it would be worth it to use the engine management parts in the truck instead of buying aftermarket stuff because of cost relateed issues? I know they are not the HO stuff you will find in 5.0 mustangs but that is fine with me because I really do not want a hot rod, just something that runs decent and gets decent mpg.

Well, the first thing to consider is converting to a 12 volt system. EFI isn't too hard, but finding a home for it all in your truck would be quite the process. Particularly the high pressure fuel lines, return line, gas tank, etc... IMO, the cfi (I think that's what yer cars have) isn't much better than a properly tuned carb. Later SEFI equipped engines would be better. But for simplicity, a carb would be best. Someone who has done it will hopefully chime in. Perhaps Lokar has the cable needed to convert your AOD to carb.
