That would be ME. I had an oil leak on the left rear from the axle and I couldn't understand why since I had replaced the axle seals. I just pulled the axle and found out I put the seal in backwards. I pulled the right rear axle and that seal was backwards too. Now I get to replace the brake shoes too. Whoopee! What was I thinking?
LOL....I thought you were calling my name there for a minute.....
The shoes are probably salvageable as long as they haven't been super saturated for a long period of time. Since your truck has just been on the road for a short period I think I'd just clean the heck out of them with brake clean (or other solvent) and slap them back on the truck.
Yup, but if they havent been soaking in the gear oil for a long period of time they will clean up. You get as much off as you can with solvent, then a few trips around the block dragging the brakes a bit and you good to go.
Nowadays, I got the money and its easy enough to replace them. When I was younger, and barely scraping by I had no qualms about using them
While you might be...as you say, a bonehead. Coming out with what you did here on FTE for all to see, might prevent someone from making the same mistake.

Nice to see I'm in good company with all you other boneheads!
The shoes are only 20 bucks so I think I'll just replace them...and my purpose in admitting this gaff was as Numberdummy said to prevent someone else out there from making the same mistake. Jag Red, if you haven't gone too far better check. It sure makes a mess...
Could be worse, trust me I think we have all done some bone head moves, My biggest and most recent was we had just got done doing the body work on my bed, we went to move it into the welding shop (Two guys carring it through a 5 car garage) because after the test fit we noticed that P.O. had trimmed alittle to much from the rear bottom of the wheel well, it was noticable once the new fenders were on, so instead of waiting for the other two guys that were coming to help, or a dolly cart we decided to go ahead and move it or selves. We made it just fine until we set it on the horses and BAM, BANG, BOOM, CRASH-Does that explain, The sides of the bed (Both sides) infront of the fenders and behind the fenders were folded up like a crinkled up piece of paper. Next thing you know it was about 60 more hours of body work to the bed. Shes done now but check back I am sure I will have more bonehead stories soon. I am sure my wife could tell you more, I try to forget them, she's great at remembering them!
