I've been searching, and can't really find my issue in the archives..
For about 6 months, my truck would start fine and then the idle, slowing down, would just quit..But it would start right up...Sometimes it did it 2-3 times before it would stay fired...
I looked at my TB, and it looked nasty, so a old toothbrush and some carb cleaner, I scrubbed the TB real good and ensure the butterflies were seating correctly at the idle...
Now, 9 out of 10 times, when I start the truck, the idle surges to 1200 RPM and right back to 700, back to 1200, then to 700....and if I leave it alone, it'll do it until it warms up (2-3 minutes)....Or I can put it in gear drive on and I have no more issues....Once I'm running down the road, no problems...
Based on what I have read, maybe it's the IAC(?)...Don't know what it is or what it does, but seems like a common denominator when it comes to Idle issues....Any help would be appreciated...Thanks..
Oh BTW, for those who remember, my trip to the sandbox has been delayed for at least a month..Maybe longer...
Yes, 9 times out of 10 idle problems on these truck is IAC related. Do the same thing you did with the TB, take it off, remove the actuator and clean the plunger with carb cleaner and whetever scraping object you can get in there. The IAC is a small cylindrical thing on the side of the TB, there are holes on either side of the throttle blades that feed this valve.
IAC affects idle mostly not much else. It does open at WOT to let in alittle more air.
Have you checked for vacuum leaks esp along the intake?
The only way I have checked for vacuum leaks is by means aof spraying the intake and around it with TB cleaner....And I didn't notice any change of RPM....
I didn't get a chance to look at the IAC..Actually, I may be a little of an idiot, but I'm not really sure what I'm looking for...There a more than a few "whatchamacallits" around the TB...So I guess I'm gonna price one at Autozone so at least I know what I'm physically looking for.
Should I do something else to looks for vacuum leaks?
Common vacuum leaks can also be found in the plastic lines near firewall on the passenger side (under hood). Mine were cracked, idle was goofy, and when I touched the cracked part it fell off in my hands. Rather than paying Ford replacement prices, I took a rubber vacuum line with the right inside diameter and slid it over the remaining ends of the broken plastic line.
It cleared up most of the problem, running some Marvel Mystery oil in the fuel tanks did the rest.
