Information please
The reason I ask is that I know that a Suburban with a GM 6.2 TD gets around 18 to 20 on highway but I do not see a lot about the highway fuel milage for the 7.3 PSD. I know the 7.3 has been around a while and should be a very dependable engine. I really hope that I do not start any GM vs. Ford arguments here and I have not made my mind up about the X yet.
I am looking for a diesel SUV to pull a camper. Do not have the camper yet need the truck first.
Thanks
I have owned 2 (both '95) 'burbans with the 6.5TD. Stay away from them if you plan on doing any towing. The cooling on them is horible. I burned up both of mine. They just can't stay cool. Every towing trip was a stomach churning event, constantly watching the temp data coming from my custom written PCM scan tool, & the factory temp gauge.
They just take too many mods (high flow water pump, dual thermistat housing, bypass, custom fan clutch, ...) to make them even close to trustworthy with a load behind.
As far as the milage - the 18 to 20 you quoted for highway is reasonable, but the 'burban gets MUCH worse around town - like any big vehicle, stop and go is killer. Mine got between 10 to 15 around town - 10 for city driving, close to 15 for small town driving, and about 20 on the highway.
My X is a gasser, but from the posts I've read here, the 7.3 is FAR superior to the 6.5TD.
The suspensions in the X aren't quite as "solid" as the SD/HD trucks. They put in softer springs for a more "car like" ride. Hanging an 8000# TT on them can make them "wander" a bit.
You should read lots of posts here to see what people are doing to make their X's tow well. Very little of it is engine/cooling related though - mostly suspension. Here is what I've done to mine - an '01 X w/ 104k:
Helwig rear anti sway bar (about $250?)
Rancho RS9000X shocks on all 4 corners (about $250?) - Many also recomend Bilstiens.
"E" load rated tires - mine were out of spec for towing my 7800# TT
Hensley Arrow weight distributing hitch - already had this...
In my opinion the Helwig and the Hensley (or another dual cam hitch rig) are the most important.
The Helwig really stopped the sloppyness in the rear end of my X. I was even uncomfortable going around corners without a trailer - the body roll was bad.
The Hensley is hands down the best towing purchase I've ever made. It is incredible. I haven't been able to tow with it on the X yet, but it saved my life, and the lifes of my family of 6, several times over. It simply cannot be beat for towing stability, sway elimination, and general control.
Emptyd I have not decided about how big a trailer yet but I was thinking of about 28 or so feet, enough to sleep at least 6 and still be comfortable. I have three grown kids, none married yet but I was thinking about future grandkids and such. I can retire from my job as a police sergeant in a couple of years and I also have a desire to travel some.
I sounds like whatever I get there are mods that have to be done.
I also have an interest in diesel and WVO systems. From what I have read it sounds like the Frybrid system may be the best. Does anyone have one on their X?
