Where do I start? -the obvious... The brakes barely work. They feel spongy at best and have to be pushed to the floor to stop the truck. Then the engine dies. Even at idle if I push the brakes in, the engine dies. I can hear a whistling noise when the pedal isn't pushed. But it goes away when under pressure. I've bled the whole system correctly and replaced the pads and shoes... SO what's left? Booster?
Thanks..
Vacuum leak at the booster? Check the line from the manifold vacuum tree to the booster, sounds like it has a crack or leak in it...since it's from '86 I wouldn't be the slightest surprised.
well I relplaced the boster with a brand new one checked all the lines and it's a little better. putting it on the floor doesn't cause the engine to die. HOWEVER... It's still not breaking like it should. I've bled the MC and the breaks. when I slam my foot down I get good break pressure, but under a gentle load it feels spongy and unresponsive. I dont know now. I'm at my wit's end. And on top of all that it's been dyin after driving long enough to get the engine warm i'll pull up to an intersection and it's goodnight... can that be fixed with a simple tune up? thanks
No, I haven't replaced the main vacuum hose. Upon visual inspection it looks ok. Things are still spongy though... I'm a one man crew here so I've had to use a cheep little one-man bleeder from autozone to do the bleeding. It's the kind with the clear tubing that feeds into a little plastic bottle about the sized of a pill bottle. But to make matters worse I think my head gasket's blown so breaks are getting ready to become the least of my worries.
Xwarrior, did you just buy this truck? Sounds like the master cylinder may be bad. Slamming the breaks doesn't give the fluid much of a chance to bleed past the seals like it does when you ease on them.
As far as the head gasket, what are the symptoms ie oil, coolant, compression.
