I'm pretty sure my alternator is on its way out. Aside from the replacement alternator, any idea what I would need (time/material). Its a 93 f150 with the 5.0 302cu 127k miles.
Be careful where you get the alternator. I got the best AutoZombie had to offer, but I was still taking it back once a year to have it replaced. Sure it was a lifetime warranty, but I got sick of changing it out every year. I would just do it in their parking lot. It generally took me about 10 minutes. All you need are a few wrenches and sockets/ratchets. Maybe a screwdriver. Make sure that the pulleys are the same size, though. The first one I bought had the wrong size pulley on it, so I either had to switch it over or get a new one. After that, I would make the store switch them out for me.
I always get mine rebuilt locally. But most parts houses sell ones from out fits that do 1000's a day . I have had problems with them. And I have had new ones go bad in 2500 miles so its give and take. If you can't get it done locally fine , or can afford it but a new one if keeping the truck for years. Good luck
All the alternators I use are remans from a company called "World Wide." I tend to find them at the bumper to bumper stores. I've had very good luck out of them for over 3 years now. Replacing the one in your truck isn't bad at all. Just make sure you un-hook the battery cables before you start and you'll be fine.
The other bit of advice I can give is after you install your new alternator, CHARGE THE BATTERY! Go ahead and let it charge over-night if it's low. This way your new alternator won't have to work as hard to charge a half-dead battery and go out quicker.
