I'm going to look at a 1991 F150 tonight and I would like some info. The truck: 91 F150, 5.8L auto Lariet. 4x2, longbed reg cab. 130,000 miles. Original owner with ALL maintence records and original door sticker! What I know: Radiator, hoses, waterpump, belts replaced recently. Tranny work done, not sure when but shift kit added. New tires and brakes. Has overload springs in the rear and owner said he used to tow a 20' travel trailer. My bro-in-law knows the guy and has seen the truck. His oppinion it that it is in fantastic shape. Book is like $3500, my b-i-l says the guy was thinking of putting it in the paper for $4500. I'll use it to go to work and back plus as a vehicle for my 16 yr old son. Reliable transportation basicly and maybe some long distance (400 miles) trips. I totally skiped Fords from the 1980's to 1997 so I have no idea about these years. Any advice or things to look for? If this truck is in such good shape what would be a good offer. When I talked to the guy he said a few times that he didn't know what to ask for it(not mentioning the $4500). Thanks so much!!
Sweet, one-owner AZ truck......well taken care of, sounds like anyway.......all records.....not a stranger.....these are VERY GOOD things..
Rust free out there.....so none of that to worry about.......he's fixed a bunch.....
Find out when he changed the tranny and motor oil last......what kind he uses......look for leaks.....check the coolant......if you keep it like he has, probly last a lonnnnng time.
FYI...mine was 92, 158,000, 302, needing tires and paint on the bed and tailgate, a few records and original owners manual, on a lot......and I gave $3400 for it.
MPG isn't like a honda.......but who wants a honda?
I'd offer $3000.....and see where he goes.....you can't go down after you start.
Well, it should be a great car for a 16 yo. It's too much money though. The 1991 body style is very dated, and sells poorly. In your area, trucks are relatively cheap (I believe). These trucks are very reliable, and there's nothing wrog with that drivetrain or anything with it. It's just a 2wd half ton.
I wouldn't pay over 2k for the cleanest 1991 half ton 2wd in the world. I don't care what book is.
I have a 91 f-150 4.9L 300 I6. I bought it from second owner who was a mechanic. Kept the engine in GREAT cond. I paid $1200 in 2004. I think a truck like that is a great truck for new drivers, They were still using more steel and less plastic then. There also easy to work on. I'm hoping to hand mine down to my son someday. Plus I know he has the steel to protect him and not plastic like those toyota POS! Offer low and see what he say's. I should mention mine had a little rust on it and has no options. Good luck!
Ok, just got back from looking at it. There are a few minor issues: passenger door needs a new armrest, drivers side mirror won't stay in position, rubber window trim needs replaced on drivers side, exhaust is getting rusty, pass door window motor makes noises, drivers window chatters on down, ok going up. Transmission was rebuilt 14,000 miles ago... it shifts really firm. The engine was dusty/dirty but otherwise clean. Only a couple door dings on the body. No rust. Tailgate and bed are like new! He had a camper shell with a regular door so the gate spent all it's life in the garage. No rips or stains on the interior. It drove pretty good for a 16 yr old truck. Pretty good power.
My research shows a high retail from $2640 to $3700. I also looked at several online resources(autotrader etc) The asking prices range from $2200 to $5300. I think I'll offer $3300 or so and see what happens.
yeah, i'd go somewhere in the lower end of the book value. all the little things are easy fix, just a little time consuming. these trucks are common enough that you don't have to pay a high price for one especially since this one doesn't have anything special about it other than condition. and i agree with mgraveman the 87-91 is probably the least desireable to own,(nothing mechanically, it's the looks) i guess it can grow on you, but i remember when they came out i though that was so ugly.
Well, I offered high end of book, $3500, and I was willing to go as high as $4200. He seemed offended that I would offer such a low amount and said that he has checked around too and thinks he could get $4500 and that was his price, Period. He didn't seem to want to negotiate so I said good luck. I could not see paying over what I would get if the truck was stolen or totalled in an accident.
My son now has an one owner 94 Mercury Cougar with 46,000 original miles.
