Does anybody have any idea on how to keep the bottom of the tailgate from rusting out? I recently purchased the truck and all the ones (about 15 in all) I looked at had rusty tailgates. I would like to have mine repaired but I need to keep the water out so it doesn't happen again.
do you have consider buyin a fiber door? that may be about 300 dlls but you never have any rust again, and also take some pounds of your truk, i'm thinking to go for it,i fix my door about a year ago and its rust again,if you'r interested check at K bar S, you may order from them.
Good Luck.
I got a new one on my Bronco a while back, and here's what I did to prevent the rust from coming back (5 years on Michigan salt roads). Peel the caulking off the bottom inside seam where the panels are flanged together. All it does is trap contaminants and make them rust the door. Squirt some oil occasionally down into the bottom inside of the door and let it seep into the folds at the bottom. You'll notice that the drain holes for the gate are higher than the seam where all the water sits
"Ron-Bo" has the right idea. My body shop buddy informed me that my Bronco's previous owner saved my flawless tailgate by drilling new holes at the bottom of it. Every single other Bronc had a rusty tailgate too, and I live in Texas.

Lisa,
I guess I am the lucky one. I have an 85 and no rust in the tailgate at all. I recently replaced the window motor and while I had it apart I coated the entire inside bottom with a spray on rubber undercoating. I have had good luck with it in the past so I did it as a preventative measure.
Good luck.
When you guys drill those holes in the bottom of the tailgate, don't forget to grab a Q-Tip and soak it in spray paint and apply it to the small holes you drilled, to keep it from rusting around the holes..... Just a thought..... Hope it helps.
