Hi Follks,
I was turning into my driveway today, heard a thud and immediately the steering wheel went stiff. Opened the hood and power steering fluid was everywhere. It looks like the metal connector on the hydraulic line separated, causing all the fluid to shoot out at once. I'm talking about the metal connector where the hose attaches to the bottom of power steering reservoir. Has anyone had this happen?
The truck is a '97 PSD, crew cab, 4x4, 136k miles.
Is this an easy fix? How do get all the air back out of the system now?
Y'all know alot about these trucks...thanks in advance for the help
i'd just get a new line. can u tell if burst or if it looks like it just got old and wore through? if it burst you may look into why it happened. have you noticed any loss of power steering prior to the failure? to bleed the system just use it. it will make that horrible noise for a while. you can drive it or raise the wheels and turn it back and forth watching the fluid level and filling until the noise goes away.
This is actually a common problem on our trucks. The hard line pointing twards the drivers fender well? Just go get a whole new line, install it, fill with fluid and your done. The air in the system will work out on it's own. Just make sure you have the level correct before you leave it alone. But it's common, and new hoses are not to expensive.
I believe what happens is the o-rings holding the solid line in just go bad after time. My truck did the same thing, and I've talk to several other guys it happened to. Hope that helps man.
Exact same thing happened to me as I was manuevering my 5th wheel into my site in West Yellowstone a few weeks ago. New high pressure hose was around $50 and it was an easy change. Like was stated before, just add fluid and then work the steering wheel left and right slowly to get some of the air out, then recheck your fluid level. Over time the rest of the air will work itself out.
Mine did the same thing and I was in my driveway as well. You pretty much can't drive the thing w/o the PS pump. I bet parking that camper was great fun.
I had that happen as I was trying to leave a parking garage in Houston, I got jammed into the exit lane. Boy that was a PITA trying to get that un-wedged. You just need to get a new line. Installations is simple, its just a little messy, thats all.
