I took my truck to the dealer for a leaking fuel tank and they said that the opening for the fuel pump had warped and caused the gasket to fail. I don't understand how a metal tank can just warp without any impact or abuse. It just started after 28,000 miles. Thanks,John

The tanks in SD are plastic and have been for quite sometime.
Thanks for the correction. So how does a plastic fuel tank just warp?
Probably a defect during manufacturing unless the top of the tank was exposed to high temperatures in this area. My bet is defect at manufacturing that just got worse.
still should be under warrenty....but plastic tanks are the best thing for diesels since sliced bread....specially since diesel fuel always attracts water.
I had a plastic fuel tank crack on an 89 Aerostar. Had to pay $600 for it myself, but it was later recalled, and since I still had the repair receipt, Ford reimbursed me.
