You are running two filters, you just don't know it. On the pickup tube in the gas tank is a plastic mesh filter screen. It prolly hasn' been changed in years if ever. The screens are still available from Ford and NAPA. If you change it, be aware that NAPA carries two types. You want the one with the larger I.D. You'll need to change the fuel sender gasket also. While you are there, check out the gas tank float. They can leak internally and sink to the bottom of the tank. Result = the gas gauge doesn't read correctly.
You might have three filters. Where the rubber fuel line attaches to the carb, that's actually the nipple of the screw in gas filter.

If you are getting no more crud, then oe should be enough. Just keep a spare carb filter in the glove box incase it ever plugs up again while you are in the boonies.
i just rebuilt the carb on my 78 f150 400 engine the kit i bought from o'rielly auto parts was a Walker part # 15593D it did not come with a filter but i have bought Walker kits for other ford 2 bbl's and two of the kits had a screen filter like a tube that goes under the nedle seat. but the O.D. of the screen tubes were allways larger then the I.D. if the passage so i never used them. when i rebuilt my carb i seen a past owner put in a gas filter fron a lawn mower it had a IN of only 1/8" no wonder i had no top end speed. LOL
Carburetor kits don't come with fuel filters. The carb internal mesh screen for the needle and seat does, but the one that threads onto the carb doesn't. Why? First of all, there are several different filters. Second...the threaded male ends can be different sizes.
