Hey guys,
Quick question. How can you check to see if you have a set of "0- degree" timing gears installed.
I have my timing set at 10-degrees, truck pings like hell.
I just bought the truck, so I have no history.
It has great compresion, no vacuum leaks, plugs are nice and brown, and it has 114,000 miles on it.
If I retard the timing a little, pinging goes away, but then I have a noticable power loss and hard starting.
Maybe it jumped a tooth, I just thought I'd ask.
Thanks
look between the valve cover and exhaust manifold- there should be a casting code there- like D3VE or D0VE, post that code, also theres a casting number above the starter- should be something like D1VE or D0VE or D9TE. post that as well. it sounds to me like someone either rebuilt the engine with a little too high compression for pump gas, or transplanted an old high compression engine. the casting numbers i asked for will let me know which.
