i need to replace the front U joint on my 78 f150 with a center carrier bearing. . the one bolt tooks easy to get to on the bearing but the other bolt has only a few inches from my side mount gas tank. how do i get a wrench inside the channal on the bolt next to gas tank? are the nuts inside that channal set so they won't turn when turning the bolts. last time i did that kind of drive shaft was on a 64 chevy many years ago. some nut welded the bearing cage to the cross member that was a bear to get out.
Take the truck to a driveline shop. You will need to get the shaft balanced after replacing the U-joints anyway. They can do the whole job in just a short amount of time. Around here it is just as expensive to get a shaft balanced as it is when they replace the U-joints also. They will charge you for the R&R of the shaft tho.
thhanks but i'm not going to rebalance it. i have done my share of U joints never did that yet. i'm not saying you are wrong or any thing. i'm jut not going to do ballance it. get that fixed and a few other thinge and a 4 sale sign goes on it.
The three piece shafts are real sensitive. I have replaced the U-joints on them many times and they have all required balancing the shaft because they vibrated afterward. The three piece shafts are different than a two-piece shaft. Never had to balance one of those either.
As far as the bolts I don't remember whether they had captive nuts. I don't remember any problems tho dropping the carrier bearing on Fords with an aux tank.
