Engine tune-up
A Haynes manual is an excellent investment......It walks you through what a tune-up is in the very beginning and has info on just about everything with your truck.
A basic tune-up is plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, air filters (may be more than one), some include fuel filters in it too.
In addition many check/set the timing during a tune-up.
MotorCraft products are excellent and recommended by almost everyone here to use and many here say that the Ford Racing 9mm spark plug wires, an MSD cap and rotor, and an MSD blaster coil also add some pep. (coil isn't usually part of a basic tune-up).
You can continue on with replacing some sensors and some emissions valves that may or may not be needed.....but basics are what is above.
The benefits are better and easier starting, better MPG and better overall performance.
No idea what it would cost as I always do it myself.....I'd guess labor in the $75 to $100 range based on todays costs.....plus the parts. Talk to some friends and see if they recommend anyone to do it if you are unable to yourself.
Good Luck
being a total noob to all of this, i'm considering taking pics and doing a write-up of how to do a basic tune-up
in other exciting news, i just got back from the gas station too. without everything listed above i got 12mpg. i was expecting 10ish in this truck. we'll see what my tune-up does to the mpgs
