I was reading a little article in carquest the other day that says as your O2 sensor ages, your MPG goes down. Has anyone had luck increasing their mileage with a new O2 sensor?
I know for a fact it's true. As time goes on and the sensor gets dirty and old it doesn't read the air fuel mixture properly and tells the computer to squirt more gas from the injectors in return causing worse than normal gas mileage. Besides it sure can't hurt to change it.
From what I've read, the rear (after cat) sensor is just for diagnostics and won't help mpg if replaced. From what I understand, the front sensors (before cats) are the ones that help mpg.
Don't know for sure how many sensors your 93 has, mine has 3...2 before cats (original, never been replaced) and 1 after (new). Someone else with more knowledge will post soon. HTH
True. I changed the O2 sensor and the EGR valve on a V8 GM vehicle and gained about 3MPG. Plus it gained power, noticeably.
Spray the O2 sensor with PB Blaster, generously and let it seat for a day. Then get the biggest breaker bar you can find and a O2 sensor socket and remove it.
My F250 has around 99K on its O2 sensor. While it doesn't show up in codes, it's probably "lazy". However, I do have the EGR valve show up in codes. I think that by replacing these two items which rob power and MPG, I can gain 1MPG, which amounts to about 10% improvement. Totally worth it.
Thanks guys, looks like Ill be picking up a new one after work. I just had the O2 sensor out when I made my new exhaust so it wont be a problem to break it free. I have only 1 sensor on my 93. Ive got 165000+ miles on the clock so like bawbinc said, I guess it wouldnt hurt to replace it. Ill update with any differences I notice.
Apropos gave you great advise to keep from twisting the threads out of the exhaust. I sprayed mine as well then I ran the truck up to temperature and as soon as I shut the truck off I jumped under it with a six point boxed end wrench and it backed out like it was new.
Also should mention that I used a regular deep 1/2" drive socket, 7/8". I cut the wire and used the socket.
Not sure about this one on F250, if this is possible. If not, have to use one of these special O2 sensors. I already got one from Advance Auto, Taiwain's best but afraid it might get bent or something. This sensor hasn't been touched in almost 2 decades. Might even invest in a good O2 socket...
OK update. I just put in the sensor. It was a snap to do since Ive had it out already, but I had to lengthen the wires since I welded the bung in the H pipe. I really didnt notice any difference right away since my truck was running ok in the first place. I guess Ill just wait and see what it does for my mileage.
