2 diff headlight switches?

ok when i go to purchase a headlight light switch at the local parts place, they as me the serial # on the vin, but whats the difference between the two? i have a 1974 f250....can i use the other one in place of the one that matches the vin? oh yeah, heres the scoop, i went to take my truck to the cruzin and i realized the taillights were not working... checked the fuse, its ok...the headlights work, as well as the brakelights...after checking all the connections, bulbs and visible wires for shorts, no luck....heres something wierd, when i hit the brakelights, the tag lights glow a pale orange color...how is this possible???

That is a clue, BAD GROUNDS!

To have an electrical circuit you must have a complete "circle" of conductors.

Basis of word:
To make a circuit or circuit of.
[Middle English, circumference, from Old French, from Latin circuitus, a going around, from past participle of circumīre, to go around : circum-, circum- + īre, to go.]

make sure one of the brake light bulbs didn't short out internally where the filaments cross. I had that mess up my lights once.

More likley its your turn signal switch, IIRC the circuit goes from the stoplight switch, into the turn signal then out to the rear of the truck.

Here is the schematic of the 78 TS switch to show how everything is connected.
The difference with yours is you don't have the hazard light switch on the column.
