fuel/water separator

When I took delivery on my 2008 F250 KR, the sales guy told me to pull the lever to release the water once a month. He even went on to say that if I pulled through the service department, they would do it real quick and I would not have to get out of my truck. So, I assumed a little bit of water would dump and that would be it. When I fliiped the lever this morning for the first time, it immediately smelled like diesel. I let it run for a few seconds to see if it would stop, but a sready stream continued. I cannot find any explanantion, instruction, or procedure in the manual or online about this. Thanks for the help!

Well, I'm not sure how different the 6.4's are from the 7.3's, but the fuel/ water seperator is just a bowl that has both fuel and water in it. The water sinks to the bottom and would get drained first when you open the drain. Btw unless you get some bad fuel, you should net get a lot of water out of there. Fwiw, I only open mine during fuel filter change time. Don't know if thats the right way, but it's worked fine for the past three psd's I've owned.

went last night to look at the new trucks, draining the water sep. once a month was one of the first things the salesman stated. The injectors must be very prone to water damage, or they want to say you didn't do it properly and not warranty the injectors when they fail.

All injectors(7.3L, 6.0L, 6.4L, cummins, duramax) are damaged by water, draining the HFCM at least every 5K miles is good practice and if the "Water in fuel" light illuminates on the dash then you need to drain it sooner.

If you buy your fuel from reputable dealers that sell a high volume of fuel you should rarely get contaminated fuel.

hope this helps

Just drained mine for the first time today. 1200 miles only. Came out clear and could smell the diesel fuel. Drained only a couple ounces into a clear bottle. only a few droplets of water and the rest was fuel. Diesel has a slight yellow color to it.

Thanks for the input. I called the salesman that told me drain it once a month. He told me to write in my service log that I did it. So, it seems it may become a warranty issue if ignored. Thanks again for the responses!

It appears that on page 60 of the 2008 Diesel Supplement manual that it says to drain the HFCM once a month. Also this information appears in the 6.0L Diesel Supplement manual.

I was given a DVD which describes this procedure and other maintenance procedures that must be performed on this truck. Ask your dealer where your DVD is.
