i would love to have a TMI 434 but it's not feasible for my wallet. so how would i go about building a very torquey 400 on a budget. i plan on buying a used block and have that one built. or since i am not driving the truck i could pull the one in it out and have it all spec'd and machined.
my goal is 450hp and 500 or so torque. more torque the merrier. wanna be able to run pump gas 88 if possible but i'll pony up for 92 if i have/need to. so i would like to be around 9.5:1 or slightly higher.
so im thinking TMI's pistons and a set of aussie heads. but dunno about everything else
The first question I have is "What is your budget" for what do you expect?
This is the first question I usually ask all my customers, then it is easy to work it backwards.
Those are some big numbers for a stock stroke engine.
Our project engine was about 390 HP & 465 torque. Aussie heads, flat hyd.
Engine on the dyno right now is 365 HP & about 455 or so Torque. Aussie heads & hyd. roller cam. To ontain that kind of HP it will need to breath.
If you go to our web site you can play with the shopping cart & custom build your own engine kit & Aussie heads.
i'm just trying to figure out mainly if it would be possible (apparently not without a power adder) to do this or if i should pony up and save for a built motor from you.
if in the future i were to buy a fox body stang to drop this engine in would it work as well. like if i went with crazy 434cid to possibly drop in a car.
Well, that's my plan, too....except in an 88 tbird. So far, custom motor mounts and headers are needed. It's been done, just that noone has really documented it on the internet, atleast that I've found. I'm getting started on pulling the 3.8, and setting the 400 block in as soon as my fingers heal...'bout another week. Once I have it all figured out, drive it for awhile, I'll then start saving up for a 434. I'm also putting one in my '48 F1. The plan is to keep everything swappable, and to be able to use jy parts as 351M/400's are still deemed anchors in the unknowing world, lol. Good luck in your efforts.
From all that i've read I agree with grclark thst the 351c 4v heads as probably the cheapest option...I think you would want the closed chamber heads which went away after '71. The closed chamber will give you the quench that you need to run higher compression. I'm amazed by the difference the closed chamber heads make regarding compression.
