I have always been told not to fill fuel tanks past two clicks of the pump. The reason for this is that the float was designed to travel only so far. Adding additional fuel, float tries to raise more, thus puts more strain on the sensor. Which inturn shortens the lifespan of the fuel sensor.
Has anyone else heared of this before? After doing the harpoon mod, has anyone had the sensor failure? Just wandering if there was any truth to what I have always been told. Would like to know all the down sides of a mod before hand so that I can make sure the pros out weight the cons...........
I fill mine up till I can see the fuel in the filler neck. I've been doing that for 50k miles and the gauge still works fine. I've also completed the harpoon modification and I see no cons. Mark
If you get fuel in the morning and go park it on a hot day the fuel will expand, as long as there is some room in the filler pipe there should be no problem.
Nope. I've had mine modded for about 150,000 miles and it still works fine. I run it down to where it's nearly out then I fill it to the absolute top.
You might consider an aftermarket pickup tube if you're going to have the tank out. I'm getting ready to pull mine AGAIN for the 5/8" draw tube from ITP I ordered yesterday.
the instructions for the mod indicate the sensor/assembly is fragile and to handle with care. I could see it not working after install if reasonable care is not exercised...
