Can any of you what a valve is, and what it does? And the importance of 24 valves in my mom's Escape? I popped the hood to replace windshild washer fluid and to look at the engine. It said, "24 Valve, DOHC" , or so I believe.
I made a post not long ago asking what size 6 is in my mom's Escape. The main reply i got was a 3.0 v6, probably SOHC. What does the "D" stand for in DOHC then??? I'm a bit confused..
Thanks in advance! I know I sound like a real dumby, but I never said I wasn't. :P

EDIT: i just wanted to say I had to drive my mom's escape for a bit on a 9 hour round trip. I love that thing. it's got a mean six, and it's peppy and just fun to drive. I love that thing! it took some getting used to to learn the front wheel drive, but it's just a blast.
Your Mom's Escape is a 3.0 liter V6 with double over head cams and 24 valves. Hence, it is called a 3.0 DOHC 24V. The double over head cam refers to the fact that the motor has separate cams for the intake and exhaust valves on each bank of 3 cylinders or 4 cams in total. Each cylinder has 4 valves, two for intake and two for exhaust (6 times 4 = 24 valves in total). Older tech motors had two valves per cylinder, most motors today that use the overhead cam design have 4 valves per cylinder although a few VW motors have 5. The increase in the number of valves improves engine breathing for increased efficiency and power.
