7.3 vs 6.4 towing
#17
Just an observation, it seems there is a lot of comparison between a chiped 7.3 and a stock 6.4. Shouldnt the comparisons be between the two motors in stock form? I used to drive a 2002 550 with a dump truck bed and a 7.3. It was a beast of a truck and im a fan of that motor, but we cant live in the past forever ya know. New isnt always better, but it isnt always bad either. I drove a 450 6.4 the other day and was impressed. It had more power then my 05 350 dually 6.0. All im sayimg is, lets give the 6.4 a chance 7.3 guys.

I went from '02 2WD 7.3 Excursion (edge tuned +80hp, 4" exhaust) to my current '08 F250 CC 4x4. Pulling a 20ft enclosed trailer loaded to around 6500lbs. Stock for stock, the 6.4 is stronger with and without a load. But with mods to the 7.3, this is what I felt.
The 7.3 with mods was a beast once locked in in OD. Hardly ever downshifted and would climb most mountains with the cruise at 72mph. The trans was never happy around town, slow shifts, lots of converter slip, not much power to the ground. 10-11mpg loaded cruising just over 70.
The 6.4 and torqshift combo is much better in town, always in a good gear to pull away strong from intersections, good power to the ground. Once up to cruise, the 6.4 is not making the torque in OD like the 7.3, so I get more downshifts on hills. The trans handles it smoothly, but mileage suffers. The taller 20" tires hurt the gearing, and the motor seems to make less torque below 2000rpm. Both trucks had 3.73 gears. I think the 6.4 with a 50hp tune or 4.10 gears would be perfect. 8-10mpg loaded.
I had hoped the 6.4 drivetrain would be perfect, but it needs justa bit more real world oomph. The rest of the truck, and the smoothness of the drivetrain, are night and day. That's a big deal if you spend many hours in the saddle. Many of our tows are 500-1000miles a day, so the comfort is worth it. The longer drivetrain warranty aslo makes me feel a bit better about the trans surviving.

At the last minute reading the posts I changed mine to 4.30’s after it had been ordered for two weeks. Looking back at it now I might have been better off with a 350drw with 4.10s so it would run 2000 rpms at 65. Running mty I get 16mpg at 60mph 1900 rpms and drops to 12mpg at 65mph at 2100rpms. Have only towed short distances so far. Historically my v10 with 3.73’s averaged 11.8 my 450 so far 11.7 Towing my V10 7.5 –8.5 and it had to tow its heart out. My advice to would be buyers: gearing is very important to what you are going to tow. Still really like my 450 and am proud to own it, have to drive it a little slower with the gearing. Just sits a little more that nice weather is here and I can drive my hawk. Apples to apples in my opinion I think a 6,000# 3.73 6.4 will get the same mileage as the 6,000# 3.73 6.0. Its when you go with lower gears and a 8700# 450 mileage will suffer. I did not get a 450 for mileage but for its towing capacity, even though we would like to, you can’t have both.
OK, my first post!!!...I currently have a F250 (7.5 460cc gas) 4.10 rear end. My whole premis of buying a new truck is for the increased MPG of a desiel. With my 460 when towing I get 6.8-7.8 mpg, empty it is 10-11.5 hiwy.
I liked the above post because it addresses one of the many questions I have.
We have a 29 foot 2007 Copper Canyon travel trailer est weight loaded is 8500-9000# conventional tow. I have been looking at the 2008 F250 Lariat 6.4L 4x4 with the stock 3.73 rear end. If I ordered it with the 4.10 rear end would the MPG increase when towing because the engine will have an easer time towing the trailer??? Or will the 4.10 gears still cut down on MPG's. All I want is 10 MPG when towing and 15 MPG when empty (or more!!!) but that would make me happy...thanks.
Dang!!! now i see the QUOTE button...sorry Firehawk
