question
how can i stop the low speed bounce in my 2004 ford ranger supercab xlt?
story
yesterday may 18 around 6:20 pm i was on a road that had speed humps. there was alot of slow traffic down this road that suddenly came to a stop as i was going up a speed hump. i was already on the brakes because of the slow traffic. as soon as i hit the hump the truck started bouncing and the the ABS kicked in and i hit the car in front of me going 5mph.
Not quite sure what it is that happened. Were they speed bumps or like the rumble strips before a stop sign or what? If you lost traction, there is no way of stopping the truck. Best bet would be either new tires or better shocks I guess or just change your following distance cuz you musta been too close.
1)the humps are spaced about every 100 feet along this road to reduce speed to 30mph
2)just put new larger tires on and i wasn't tail gating and the shocks are fine because it only happens when im below 20mph(since i bought the truck) and at the time due to slow traffic i was going 10mph then traffic just stopped dead just as i was going over the hump the front end bounced and the abs kicked in then slam i hit the car in font of me i didn't have time to react
3) if the shocks are bad why didn't ford spot this at my last service they didn't even find that my brake pads were bad i had them changed about 4,000 miles ago when they were bare metal on metal
One of the very first things that was ever taught to me when I learned to drive was NOT to hit your brakes going over bumps or holes. What probably happened was right after your front tires hit the bump and were airborn for a split second, they tried to lock up tricking the ABS throwing you into the rear of the car. Quitting the stopping on bumps alone will eliminate some premature brake failures.
How many miles do you have on your truck? My 04 has 41K on it and I'm still on my first set of brake pads and I run oversized tires which are harder to stop than stock tires. I don't think there is anything wrong with your truck...just a strange situation due to some wierd circumstances and you had an unfortunate accident.
got 34,600 and unfortunately in my area i have a lot of bad drivers, bad roads, and speed humps and i deliver pizza's for a living. I've already replaced my brake pads, I've bought some new gas shocks and i will put them on Tuesday and see if that stops the problem.
level 2 do you have a gear box or an automatic transmission because my uncle has a 1980 ford truck with the original brakes on it with over 90,000 miles on it. he used the engine compression in 1st to stop his truck and the brakes when he's on hills.
When I'm casually stopping with no rush I'll use my engine as a jake brake like a semi truck. Put her down a gear and coast to a dead idle roll and then stop/turn.
Even if your pads last that long (90k) i can guarentee that your rotors are rust pitted through. I had a guy with an 03 mustang come in that only drives it in the summer time to avoid snow and rust. His brake rotors were starting to rust pit allready because he would park the car for so long. There is a certain point to where babying your vehicle is just as bad for it as abusing it.
changed the front shocks today and i found that they were bad i could compress them with my hands with no assistants then let go and they stayed compressed i had to pull them back to full size and i herd a gurgling noise when i did that so now i got a set of gabral ultras for light trucks and suvs on it now
wasn't blaming the tool and i put myself in the bad driver total. the accident was ruled my fault and i accepted that its not the first one I'm at fault for I've had 3 crashes in the past 5 years one in 2003(at fault engine died at 75mph lost control =f-150) one in 2005(major reckless driving in a parking lot=ranger) and one in 2007(following too close for the conditions=ranger)
