I'm in the process of removing my old rusty bed on my '80 and ran into a problem (big surprise huh?). I can't figure out the size of the bolt that holds the fuel filler neck to the bed. It's kinda tight in there so I can't get a wrench on it, so I was wondering if anybody knows what size it is off the top of their head? TIA!
Nope, not off the top of my head. But I do have the size of the bolt head written down. It is just a matter of walking a few feet and reading my notes.
Well after digging thru my socket collection, I found one to fit. It took a 4.5mm socket. After grinding the bolt heads off (the effects of 27 years of rust) the bed is now off! now all that remains is to repaint the frame, change out a few worn out parts then put the bed back on!
did you try spraying it with PB Blaster or a rust penetrator? that stuff works wonders for me. i spray it on ... walk away ... spray it on next day walk away, spray it on next day and break bolts loose...
what are you taking bed off for anyway? paintin chasis or what?!?
Ya, I had been spraying it every other day for the last two weeks in preperation, but the bed was so rusted out that the bolts tore what was left of the metal where it is ovaled to keep the bolt from turning, hince the bolts just merrely spun when I put the twist on them.
I was pulling to bed to replace it. The poor thing was so rusted that I could use it as a salt spreader in the winter. The rest of the truck's body is in good condition, and there is nothing wrong with it mechanically except for a leaky doughnut gasket that I need to replace this summer. It is one of my reserve vehicles and general heavy duty work truck, so it doesn't get driven very much
