brake help

Last week it was time to change the rear brakes on my Aviator, have had trouble since. I replaced the rotors and the pads. After doing this the back driver side as been smelling real bad like it is burning and gets so hot that I can not even touch the wheel for about an hour after driving or it burns my hand. I took it into the dealership because I was thinking that it was a sticking caliper, but they told me that they checked the calipers and they are fine. They put another new set of pads on and turned the rotors. By the time I got it home the brakes were so hot that they were smoking. Any ideas?

It could be a collapsed brake line which could cause the caliper to stick.

Yes, especially if you were careless with the calipers when you had them off. Sometimes all it take is letting them hang from the brake hose to "kink" it internally.

Do this.. jack up the rear end. Have someone in the car start it up and apply the brakes. Then try to turn the wheel by hand as the release the brakes. It should release instantly when they let up off the pedal. If it releases gradually, or sticks for a while then I would suspect the brake hose on that side.

Good luck.

Did this fix your problem MRB? It looks as if I have the same problem on my explorer '05, same exact problem, same wheel, driver side rear. Burning brake smell, I used my own saliva (trusty, and wet) and wiped some on each rotor, on 3 it evaporated... at a fairly acceptable rate after a drive, on the driver rear it BURNED OFF and sizzled as if it were placed on top of a grill at about 500 degrees. Anyway, any word on your situation?
