Has anyone had any major sucess in signifigantly improving the fuel milage on a 7.3 PSD? A friend add a $400.00 superchip programer and claims 4-6 mpg increase ? Is this the most cost effective upgrade for mpg?
I can't really say for the 7.3, however i have the 6.0 with an Edge Juice with Attitude and it got me about 2 mpg across the board(on the highway and while towing). Of coarse that fluctuates based on settings and driving habits, but for normal use, appx. 2mpgs. Your friends increase seems a little high to me though. Did he do anything else around the same time?
Only other mod that I know of was the big Napa air filter in place of the factory air box. He has the computer on the headliner for his mpg info. Possibly the programer screws with the readings of the mpg computer giving incorrect info?
Definitely would not trust the computer! Hell, I don't even trust the automatic shutoff at the pumps as these ford will cause it to shutoff prematurely and not take that last gallon or two. Which when you are talking the kind of mileage that our trucks get, a couple gallons can make a big difference to the mpg!!
I have found that you need to keep things under 2k rpm to maintain 15+mpg in my truck. Running 4" exhaust and diablo sport ecu box under in the firewall.
I didn't really notice an increase in mpg when I added my Superchips Power programmer. IF I could keep my foot out of it I might haha......but I'm a total leadfoot. I can tell you that I didn't suffer any decrease, and I added 90hp with the top setting, that in itself is great if you ask me. By the way....I get around 13-14mpg in town, 18-19mpg highway mileage with my 2000 F250 7.3 stroker, 6 inch lift, 35's with 3:73 gears
I'm running a 90hp Predator tuner along with a muffler delete and a 6637 air filter. I just knocked down 21mpg on the highway and have been knocking down 17-18 city/hwy driving to/from work.
ReAX is correct. Fuel mileage is a function of your right foot! I just started taking it easy and have gotten these results.... If I run it around 75 on the interstae it'll knock down about 400 a tank. I just ran it at 67 and it knocked down 540 a tank..... Slower is better...
John, Tell me about your muffler delete. Something you purchased already made or did you or did you have someone build one? How loud is it in the cab at idle and at constant speeds? And lastly, how does it sound out side? Talked to a local muffler shop (I'm out in BFE) and they advise against having them elemenate the muffler. Said the ones they had done sounded like a gas v-8 with a bad miss which they said sounded bad or not as nice as the cummins by a long shot. Tried to sell me a diff. muffler. I'm still stock at this point but my thought was less back press. better turbo response, plus ponies and mpg. Don't want it too nasty in the cab though. I spend many a winter hour plowing. My buddies 6637 air filter is loud enough over factory much more than that and the wife and 4 and 6 yr. old are probably howl. I do have a crew cab, long bed so the exhaust tip is as far back as i poss. from factory.
The delete was on there when I bought it. It doesn't have any drone from what I can tell. I have friends with some PSD's with the stock mufflers and it sounds the same in the cab. If I roll down all 4 windows and cruise around it'll drone some during idling and real low speeds.
All the previous owner did was remove the old muffler and weld in some heavy duty pipe that is slightly bigger than the stock stuff. Now sure if the heavy wall has somehting to do with the drone or not.
It's loud outside the truck for sure. Down right obnoxious sometimes if my foot is in it!!!
I like it. That's all that matters.
Not sure if there's any MPG in it though. My dad knocks down a little better MPG than me and his truck is bone stock with a 85 or 90 Superscips tune in it. It is proven to lower the EGT's though...
