For about 30K miles I have had a low rumble coming from the rear. I thought it might be a wheel bearing but when I pursued the issue, two mechanics and a tire dealer said it was tire noise. It did start about the time Ford recalled the Firestones: mine were replaced with Goodrich.
I took it in for another "ride" because it seemed to be getting a little louder. After a teardown, I have a bad carrier bearing and metal shavings have ruined the other bearings. The good news seems to be that the gears are OK.
Seems a little strange that about 8000 miles ago the rear end fluids were changed and no one saw any metal shavings! That was probably a situation of the least qualified being assigned the job.
I now have about 90K on it and sure hope the tranny does not need a rebuild soon! Been to the blown plug game. 2002 V10
It may have been tire noise all along and the increased noise was actually the bering going bad? Hence no shavings till now. Or the bearing went bad slowly, and eventually got so bad it started eating itself up.
I guess what im saying is you never know so learn as much as you can and diagnose your own problems whenever possible.
When I got mine it had about 40K miles or so and had a similar noise. For a while I thought it was tires but finally put the rear axle on jack stands and ran it and you could really hear the noise. I also thought it was a wheel bearing, took it to the dealer, who tried to tell me they couldn't hear anything. Finally after telling them to run it with the wheels off the ground they pulled the cover and discovered shavings. Upon disassembly they determined it was a carrier bearing, they picked up part of the cost, still cost me $400 or so. Now at 61K and it sounds OK, time to change rear fluid but thinking about putting in 4.30s so haven't done it yet.
