tranny question for engine swap
Hello,
I posted this over in the 61-65 forum also, but since I am going cross-platform I thought I would post it here as well.
I have a 61 short uni that has a stock 223-6 cyl and column shifted 3 spd in it. I am looking to put a 302 in it and I need some information.
Is this stock tranny the same as the 3spd that came in the later 302 equipped trucks? Or am I gong to have to source a tranny as well? I really want to stay with the column shifted configuration.
If I can use the tranny that is in the truck, what do I need to look for in terms of a bellhousing? Will a stock 302 bellhousing from a later truck work?

I'm not sure if your 3 spd is the same as later models, as they changed toploader cases in '65. If it's the smaller square mounting flange, then you might be in trouble. The pilot diameter on the tranny is smaller and will not work on later bellhousings. I don't think the early 6cyl bell will fit a 302 either? Not well versed in the older generation stuff. I'd bet that your bellhousing is probably a 5 bolt version(like the 289 had back then). Can't interchange with post '65 stuff.
Your best bet would be find a complete running gear and swap it all.
