I can't for the life of me understand why the lawyers haven't asked for a change of venue... I can't imagine how those defendants could possibly get anything resembling a "fair trial" when the presiding judge hasn't a clue....

In any case, it would seem that the judge *ought* to recuse himself if he had such a poor working knowledge of the situation... But then, that's one of my "hot buttons."
It doesn't work like that in Britian. A fair trial is one where YOU prove yourself not guilty.
I do believe you are talking about France (and a few other European nations).
Britain was the FOUNDER of common law and have incorported such a concept long ago.
