New Ranger Model???

Hello all;
I am looking into a new Ranger (or something symilar in size) in the near future and was wondering if there was any word on when the new truck would be out. I love the current Ranger, I drove one at work for a while. It was a tough little truck, trust me I tested. I want the size for a commuter as my big block 250 is a bit much, but I need 4 real doors and room for four adults. Currently the best a Ranger can do is two adults and a couple of midigets (Joke, no offense intended). I would hate to have to go asian but I had an S10 and there is a reason they are not made any more, and the Dodge is on the big side.

I keep hearing rumors of an upcoming new truck, any details or new rumors?

dont know man but its long over do. i keep telling the midgets behind me to shut up, a real 4dr is coming soon.

i didnt want to upsize out of the light truck market for 4 drs and the only maker who is keeping that right now is gm. dont want a gm either.

imports went up in size. and with the 4dr rangers running south of the border and across europe look like ford has done it right.

now we need to make ford sell those hear.

sporttrack is not an option.

I have looked at the sport trac a little and I cannot call it a truck. SUV yes, truck no. I need something that can be worked like a truck and will live. I have my 97 250 for the heavy stuff but the "future" Ranger is going to be the all around vehicle. I need it to live when the going gets tough.

How is a sport trac less of a truck than a Ranger? its built on the same frame with many of the same parts...

I find the Sport Trac to fill in nicely for a four door full size small pickup (if that made sense). Plus, 4.6L V8 and stick shift, that's hard to beat in my opinion.

Supposedly either the Ranger ends or is redesigned for the 2009 model year. We shall see with engine plants closing, factories shutting down, etc.

Whether Ford changes or ends the Ranger model, there will still be plenty of them on the road for buying and selling --thank goodness!

I am calling the Explorer Sport Track an SUV and not a truck because of the way it is built. I have never seen a work truck with independant rear suspension. This is just one example where form comes before function on this vehicle. I am not saying that it is not built well, just that it is built for a different purpose. It is built to be ran around town and freeway use by people who want a car / SUV with a little outdoor storage. This day and age many people are wanting just such a vehicle, that does not change the fact that it was not designed to be a true work truck or see the abuse that such a truck may have to live with.

I am not trying to start a fight over this, it is just my opinion with a few facts thown in.

I agree. It's an SUV with a small, open trunk.

Also, see the mileage ratings in this thing? 15/21 regardless fo whether you get the 4.0-V6 or the 4.6-V8. This stinks.

One of the reasons I like my Ranger is because it can work AND it gets pretty decent mileage (~20 MPG HWY). I'm betting the Sport-Trac won't match the Ranger's fuel efficiency (or durability).

Good job Ford. [climbing down off soapbox....]

before i bought my 06 ranger last year i test drove a sport track, it road awesome, i drove the 4.0 one, and the shifting, ford has spent some money in making the engine and tranny work well togeather unlike the ranger.

but like stated earlier, independent suspension doesnt sit well in the truck market.

cmos, there is no ranger fuel efficiency, unless your talking about the 4 bangers. 3.0 and the 4.0 get the same mpg, thats not technology.

Zach, the Sport Trac has never been offered with a stick....so thats pretty easy to beat LOL. The 4.6 has good HP ratings but from everyone I talk to, its not as peppy as one might think.

The Sport Trac does not nor has it ever shared a frame with the Ranger. It shares the basic frame architecture with the Explorer which hasn't been built on the same frame as the Ranger for many years.

I see your point, but I guess what I'm saying is that IMO, my Ranger ger decent mileage (20 MPG HWY with 4.10 gears) AND I can still haul some stuff when I need to ( not to mention this is one tough little truck).

Reasonable mileage + work capacity + long-term durability = good!

The Sport-Trac has a stumpy "bed", and will not get the mileage that I'm getting now - with either engine option.

That stopped in 2001. The Explorer has had it's own platform since 2002.

Hello all;

I have been looking at the Sport trac as a option, but again as I stated above, it is designed to be a SUV. The engineers at Ford designed it with an emphisis on form over function. It is designed to have all of the whistles and bells, then lead a asphalt based life. I am interested in the Ranger due to it not having all the extra stuff that I do not value. I understand that some people want that and that is fine by me. I need the seating and door space in the cab, but otherwise just need / want a mid to upper equiped Ranger. Something simple to work on and maintain (as much as any newer vehicle) that is tough enough to live a rough and tumble life. This has been an interesting thread because the Sport track is an option that I have been seriously looking into because it is currently avalable, unlike a 4 door Ranger. With this said, my original question on the remodel of the Ranger still stands. Does anybody know anything?

Ranger sales have gone from 330,000 in 2000 to 92,000 last year. They have sold 26,000 in the first 4 months of this year. That's down 5,000 from last year.
By compairson, Toyota has sold 61,000 Tocoma in the first 4 months of this year. Do the math and draw your own conclusions.
IMO there won't be a Ranger remodel. In 3 years there probably won't be a Ranger at all.
