Opinions on the tailgate step?

I ordered my F250 SD 6.4 last week pretty well loaded up. I didnt get the step as I felt is might become more trouble than its worth. Any real life experiences with this while I can still add it ? Thanks Peter

I have the tailgate step on mine and we use it all the time. My kids and wife really use it. I find myself just jumping in the back with out it. But the rest of my family give that thing a work out.

My ten year old son really loves it. On the dealer lot though. Is that real world?

tailgate step

Originally had my truck ordered with 4.88s and changed it to the tailgate step instead. Now after having used it, I am very glad I did. For example this week I had 3 yards of wood chips to spread. It was great being able to step up and down getting the last ½ out. I find I use it more than I thought I would. It is very easy to use, don’t really need the handle to get up and down. You can go down front wards as well as back wards. I have a ¾ inch of plywood that I put on the bed floor to make it easier to scrape out the wood chips. The tailgate covering they have makes it very easy to drag the plywood and other things over without scraping things up. I would highly recommend the tailgate step. Also the supplemental heater works great. When it was down in the teens, heat came out 100 yards down the road. Did I tell you how much I like the new 08? Fantastic truck!

I ordered mine without the step. My main concerns were durability over the long run and the stupid plastic tailgate liner with the handle in it. The first concern we will see about a few years down the road. The second I have since learned that you can pull off the whole handle/plastic liner and put the standard tailgate insert in. BTW, my three year old needs a hand up but he can get down on his own, this is a 4x4 F350.

Tail gate step is a plus. initially i didn't think it was a big deal, but i have used it alot and very happy w/ it so far. I agree w/ other poster i don't know how durable it will be in years to come, but seems pretty sturdy. hope this helps.

At the end of a long work day, loading up my tools while tired, that step and the goofy looking handle are well worth the cost. Initially, I wasn't going to order it for fear the bumps in the tailgate would interfere with unloading gravel, stone, topsoil, mulch that i regularly carry. It can also interfere slightly when sliding heavy things in/out. (I work alone most of the time. Too stubborn and impatient to seek help when sometimes I should.)

My bottom line after a month of ownership-Real glad i got it. In fact, last night, while installing my new tonneau cover, I musta climbed in and out 20 times. I'm not getting any younger (51 yo now) and i plan to keep this truck 'til i can't make use of its capabilities any more, so i figure it's as important for us getting-older types as for the younger and fairer people.

Pictures are in my gallery in the After album. Bought them here http://www.american-truck-auto.com/billet/ford_superduty_20563.shtml The side vent inserts were very easy to put it, just pop off the whole thing and swap the plastic for the billet takes about 5-10 minutes total. The grille inserts were a lot of work, highly recomend having it professionally done unless you have a lot of experience working with die grinders. They do have a six peice set for the front that is just an overlay for the chrome grilles.

I bought my truck from dealer stock and it had the step on it. I didn't want it. The plastic "bed liner" piece that the pole/handle hides in is very awkward (at least for me). I had some issues loading up my dirt bikes so I did what 66stang suggested and removed the handle, bought a standard inspection plate then LineX’d the whole thing. Another thing, I hated seeing the yellow pole in my rear view mirror all the time. I use the actual step all the time.
